God knows there’s no quicker way these days to feel like an old man than looking at a remix package and recognising precisely none of the remixers. So imagine my joy at receiving an advance copy of the second Maddslinky single off his latest album Make A Change and seeing some familar faces – in fact, it’s a pretty inspired selection, with Falty DL attempting some Photek-style drum programming, Funk Butcher going four-to-the-floor (you need to check his shows on rinse fm), fellow Mancunian Illum Sphere from Hoya:Hoya, and El-B taking it back to the early days of >>Forward at Velvet Room where Maddslinky/Dave Jones/Zed Bias (all of the above) used to play regularly.
But, despite all this firepower, none of the remixes can test with the original, which has been around a little while, picking up plaudits from the listeners of Gilles Peterson’s show who voted it one of their tracks of 2010. It features really lush 4hero-style strings, nasty sub-bass and Tawiah showing just what she’s made of (in fact, her time is now as rumour has it she’s been picked up by Warner Music Group). Here’s the stream. The single and remixes will be out in January. Oh, and also out on the street is the Maddslinky’s slept-on 2002 album Make Your Peace. You need that!
