A lonely pair of shoes dangling from a telephone wire… Is it a covert sign that you can score drugs in the neighbourhood? Is it a tribute to the memory of a fallen soldier? Is it a practical joke played out amongst friends? Or is it the only true last resting place that any self-respecting shoe lover will reserve for that trusty pair of trainers that has given years of good service..

And more importantly, how did they get up there anyway?

The mystery of the flying kicks has baffled urban griots and street urchins for decades, centuries, possibly millennia. In the 5th century BC, Zeno wrote the Ars Footwearia in which he formulated the famous paradox: “Achilles has disburdened me of my limited-edition calf-skin sandals.  Hark. I see them hanging from the cedar tree.”

But it seems like the days of this mystery are now numbered thanks to the work of Matthew Bates, a private investigator and sometime filmmaker who seems to have discovered whodunnit and why… Or has he?  Currently slated for release next year, his documentary ‘The Mystery of Flying Kicks’ will put an end to all speculation and we can worry about more pressing questions instead, like where do all the missings socks go?
