Organised by Warm Agency, their temperate name fitted the night: Plastics was a sweatbox! Crammed with jubilant ravers, Dixon guided the crowd through four hours of house pleasure.
Hearing the confirmed reports about Michael Jackson’s death upon entrance, it was definately a case of remembering where you were when you heard the news. Rather than sculk in sadness, the crowd jacked, smiled and sang to the festivities curated by the superb German DJ. Culoe De Song’s ‘The Bright Forest’ (Innervisions #21) sent the crowd ballistic. With it’s shreaking vocal, surging low-end and enriching keys. Another Innervision alumni dazzled the dancefloor as Chateau Flight’s ‘La Roquette’ stomped along. Blending the old with the new, Dixon dropped George Morel’s Strictly Rhythm classic ‘Let’s Groove’, which proved the pinnacle of the my evening. A phenomenal song from ‘93 fitting superbly amongst the 21st Century cuts.
In one of the more bizarre moments I’ve encountered at Plastic People, a technical problem caused the music to cut out for about 5 minutes quite early on. Spurred by the night’s events the buoyant crowd sang an impromptu Michael Jackson megamix to the amusement of all there. ‘Man in the Mirror’ was the standout number.
With Winston having to inform that Plastics needed to close (cops parked outside enforcing the 2am license!), Dixon closed the occasion with the Todd Terje rekutt of MJ’s ‘I Can’t Help It’, cue a singalong finale!
Props and thanks to Dixon, Ali Tillett and all at Innervisions, Warm and Plastic People.
NB: After a week dealing with the hustle of a dayjob and a heatwave, this write up of Thursday 25th June got waylayed. Better late than never.
