With Valentines Day rolling up for another year, it’s about time we catch up and throw some light on one of the most consistently dope blogs around, where love is in the air 365 days a year. Themes For Young Lovers is run by Mike Corbett aka Maccy D, who sums up what it’s about in the intro to the site:
Welcome to the Themes For Young Lovers Blog! Here you will find music spanning a wide range of genres but every single tune will share a common bond, the theme of LOVE ♥
The theme of love in music pops up everywhere, it doesn’t matter if it’s country, pop, rock, hip hop, heavy metal, funk, soul, indie, disco, prog rock or classical it’s not often you’ll get through an album of any of the genres mentioned (not too mention the ones I didn’t) and not come across a love song of some description.
We’ll cover all types of love songs from the perfect mixtape tracks for trying to win that special someones heart, to music to hold hands, make out and get busy to, to break-up songs and everything in between.
I recently chatted to the man about how the whole project got started, and thought it’d be a bit of fun to flip things up and put him in the hot seat for once. Below is the result, ending with Maccy D answering the standard questions that he puts forward to his impressive array of guests on the site.
Themes For Young Lovers has been a pet project of mine for the past few years, it began with a series of tapes I made for my girlfriend which then turned into an official Themes For Young Lovers compilation I put together but unfortunately due to the label that I worked for ceasing to exist it never saw the light of day
I started the blog last year and have been adding content on the reg ever since.
Everyone that I’ve had through so far or approached, are all people i’m a BIG fan of so they’ve all been great. I do have a list of people i’d love to have contribute in some way and a couple at the top of that list would be The Love God – Richard Mercer & Danny Krivit.
The following are the standard Themes For Young Lovers questions I’ve been asking people for the blog and I’m stoked cos this time round I’m on the other end of them for once!
Name – Mike Corbett aka Maccy
A/S/L – 31/Male/Sydney, Australia
Name 3 songs that would be no-brainers to put on a mixtape for that special someone you were trying to woo:
I Found Love – The Free Design
When You Put Your Hand In Mine – Sun
You Bring Out The Best In Me – DIT
You’ve turned the lights down low, lit the candles and poured the dom perignon, what LP goes on the stereo?
Al Green’s ‘I’m Still In Love With You’ or Air’s ‘Moon Safari’ will help you get across the line everytime.
What is your fave romantic film of all time?
I love the quirky unconventional love flicks like Harold & Maude, Annie Hall & Stranger Than Fiction oh and the heavily slept on classic Revenge Of The Nerds IV (Nerds In Love)
You’ve just had your heart broken, what’s the song that you play to ease the pain and get you through?
‘Everybody Plays The Fool’ by The Main Ingredient, a lot of people seem to opt for darker, depressing tunes when dealing with breakups but for me it’s gotta make me look on the brightside and stay on the positive tip. Another more recent joint i’d flog after a bust up would be Mayer Hawthorne’s ‘Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out’
What song was/or will be played during the first dance at your wedding?
You can have your slow jamz, If things all go according to plan with my current squeeze i’ll be stepping out to ‘Concrete & Clay’ by Unit 4 + 2
Who out of the following 3 do you think has played the biggest part in helping increase the world’s population over the years, Al Green, Barry White or Marvin Gaye?
I should probably get rid of this question as Marvin has got the nod almost everytime. I’m sure a lot of people have been healed sexually as a result of Marvin’s music and chances are if you were born in or around 1973 (Let’s Get It On) or 1982 (Sexual Healing) lets face it, your parents probably had Marvin on high rotation.
What’s your fave guilty pleasure/cheesiest love song?
Color Me Badd’s ‘All 4 Love’ or New Kids On The Block’s ‘You Got It (The Right Stuff)’ i had both of those on cassingle!
