Like the obligational Nirvana phase for young teenage rockers, a stint of obsession with Atari Teenage Riot was a rite of passage for electronic music fans.

The creators of digital hardcore (both the genre and the label), the Berlin group – comprising of Alec Empire, Carl Crack, Hanin Elias and Nic Endo – subverted all the rules of techno and rock music. Too radical in its views and statements and simply too loud and noisy to fit in neatly inside any genre – with Hanin screaming about police violence and revolution, ATR opened many doors for female artists to follow at the time.

Out of the band’s intensity came explosive live shows, and as their influence and popularity grew these more frequently ended in violence and riots. When John Peel asked ATR to play Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in 1999, the stage was the stormed and the venue lost all control of the situation. The group effectively disbanded in 2000, with any chance of reformation eliminated on September 6, 2001 by the fatal drug overdose of MC Carl Crack.

Ten years on, the band have confirmed they will be reuniting for one more show. May 12th at The Electric Ballroom in Camden, the three surviving members will be joined on stage by American MC CX Kidtronic, filling in for Carl Crack.

A new single has also been confirmed for May, but in the meantime you can get a hold of a freebie dubstep remix released via Alec Empire’s soundcloud profile, embedded below for stream or download.

Brilliant review!...
Version of S/D/Mofo was unhinged; definitely not ponderous. It was crazy, dirty, wrong...
Stunning photo, whoever took that must really know what they're doing. Oh, good tracks ...
