For a veritable feast of popping, locking, breaking and contemporary hip hop dance theatre, head down to Sadler’s Wells next month for Jonzi D’s Breakin’ Convention.
This is Jonzi’s seventh year curating a festival that’s now synonymous with the very best of these artforms. This year, look out for Suga Pop from the Electric Boogaloos, whose performance back in 2007 was one of the festival’s highlights. This year, he’s leading a tribute to Greg Campbellock Jr, one of the pioneers of locking, who died in January.
His legacy lives on in crews like the Japanese Hilty & Bosch, who will be making their debut UK performance.
For some popping action, watch Denmark’s Big City Brains flex liquid contortions choreographed by old-school cat Mr Steen. Among other equally talented contenders, there’s also French sister duo Cathy & DeyDey performing their robot moves together. DeyDey was the first woman to win the UK Bboy Championships Popping Battle in 2009.
And, of course, Breakin’ Convention has some world-class breaking action on the cards. French crew Pro-Phenomenon and Phase T will get us all reaching for our shell toes. Or not. This time, it might just be easier to watch.
