Of the many artists vying for the ‘sound of the summer’ crown, Planet Mu’s Oriol is one of the most gifted.

His shimmering debut, Night and Day, is a glorious homage to jazz, broken beat, early Detroit techno and 80s soul, all stamped with his sensitive and masterful production. It’s pure quality from start to finish.

There’s a real sense of freedom that runs throughout the record – that he hasn’t ascribed to any one particular scene and sought to emulate its sound. Perhaps this is because he was born in Barcelona, studied music in Boston, and now lives between London and Cambridge.

And in the spirit of this diversity – and in celebration of the sunshine – here are Oriol’s top-five summer jams:

1. Brazilian Love Affair – George Duke (Sony)

2. For Real – Roy Ayers (Polydor)

3. Ain’t No Half Steppin’ – Heatwave (Epic)

4. Moontrane – Larry Young (Blue Note)

5. After the Rain – John Coltrane (Impulse)

Night and Day is out on 19 July. The first single, Coconut Coast, including remixes by Falty DL and Jake Slazenger, is out now.

Brilliant review!...
Version of S/D/Mofo was unhinged; definitely not ponderous. It was crazy, dirty, wrong...
Stunning photo, whoever took that must really know what they're doing. Oh, good tracks ...
