Cooly G takes her Twitter account very seriously. The Hyperdub-signed DJ and producer has become something of a celebrity on the pithy social networking site, gaining a reputation for her descriptive rants and a whole lot of teeth kissing.
“It’s a bit dramatic, isn’t it?” she says, laughing at the recognition. “Someone just got in touch and said ‘@coolyg your posts crack me up but what does kmt mean?’”
Follow her and you’ll not only discover it stands for ‘kiss my teeth’ but you’ll also find out that when she’s in the mood for a fight, no one is spared – not least Richard Branson, who she’s threatening to “cuss out so I can get some free Virgin flights somewhere” after a difficult Virgin Trains journey recently.
But when talking to Cooly G – whose real name is Merissa Campbell – her tone starts to make sense. The girl pulls no punches, and her focus and drive is all consuming. She likes things done properly.
Merissa’s currently working on her solo album, set to drop later this year on Hyperdub, and is doing a whole lot of travelling in between. “Yeah it’s dramatic,” she says, using her favourite adjective once more. “I’m enjoying it but I get mad tired. The only thing I’m not enjoying is that I haven’t seen much of my son.”
Merissa’s voice softens at the mention of her three-year-old “little man” who’s staying with her mum at the moment.
But despite having to spend time away from him, she’s pretty ecstatic with how her career has taken off. Merissa’s done music all her life but “I get speechless when I think about how fast it’s happened for me,” she says. “It’s hard to take anything in properly.”
She makes beats wherever she goes, her Korg Nanopad rarely leaving her side, and she’s also been working on some material with fellow producer Simbad. “I accidentally played one of our tracks at the Fusion Festival and they went nuts!” she says. “Before I got signed to Hyperdub, I was listening to Simbad, Karizma and DJ Gregory. They were the people that I really loved.”
What’s more, her very own label, Dub Organizer, is almost ready for launch. “I’m signing people at the moment and it ain’t just one type of music. It’s a mixture of sounds. I’m really excited,” says Merissa.
“I just like being enthusiastic and not lazy. If you don’t do stuff, your body becomes really shit. People end up being sick when they’re like 30-something,” she suggests. Perhaps material for a self-help book one day? “I’ve been writing a book since I was 16,” she replies.
Cooly G will be playing at the Rizla Arena at the Lovebox Festival in London, which takes place from 16-18 July.
