At a time when London tunes its ears to the sounds of Reggae, Soca and Steel Pans, OkRA is looking towards the Creole Caribbean for its carnival inspiration. Hailing from Haiti via Paris, the Vodoun funk of ADJABEL provides the centrepiece of our Creole Carnival Special.
Since the pioneering Ti-Roro put the Vodoun drums on the world stage almost 50 years ago, Haiti has had few ambassadors for their powerful drum tradition. Led by master drummer Atissou Loko, ADJABEL are presently the global champions of this exceptional music. Their compositions combine the raw sound of the Vodoun drum, usually confined to ritual ceremony, with a searing horn section, funked-out guitar hooks and vital vocal lines. Having played all over Europe, we are proud to be the first to bring ADJABEL’s excellent show to a UK stage. Maintaining the Creole theme, fellow Parisians KAVALIE O DAM provide a strong support; reviving and exploring the rich repertoire of rural music from Martinique and Guadeloupe using the Bamboo Flute and Traditional Gwo Ka drums.
