Although a Latin, soul and jazz outfit is an unlikely musical export of West Yorkshire, Grupo X, with their 2001 debut, X-Posure, turned all of the right heads and won support from UK heavyweights Gilles Peterson and Snowboy, and Stateside selectors Louie Vega, DJ Spinna and Bobbito.
Led by trombonist and Loft Recordings label owner Jonny Enright, Grupo X released a further two full length projects, Food For Your Latin Soul in 2006, and Grupo X Remixed a couple of years later. In 2009, the band toured with Joe Bataan, the King of Latin Soul, and reunited for a set at last year’s award-winning Vintage festival.
Since then, the players have been digging deeper into their musical past and have recorded this new set, exploring their funk, soul and jazz roots. As Hills Go By features the stunning vocals of Lisa Millett, whose live performances have impressed audiences at recent shows in Manchester at Band on the Wall and in London at the Canary Wharf Jazz Festival.
‘Waiting All Day‘, The LP’s lead single, features a dance floor focused rework from Johnny Machin, but it is the original cut that shines brightest as a heartfelt beacon of sincere Yorkshire soul.
