The fiercely independent Punk/Jazz/Funk quartet Red Snapper play a full live set at The Garage on December 1st. Following up from their critically acclaimed seventh album Key and a series of live dates at the world’s most important festivals over the Summer, they now embark on a UK tour sure to make the delights of the legions of hardcore fans the band has amassed over the years as well as any neophite hoping to see one of the most hardheaded and original bands around. Support comes from bass merchant Kidkanevil and Solid Steel mix if the year 2010 winner DJ Irk.

Red Snapper pioneered their unique brand of ghostly sonic landscapes, ripping machine gun rhythms and bone shaking bass during one of the most fertile periods for electronic music in the UK. Standing tall in the company of The Prodigy, David Holmes or Massive Attack the band stood out from the crowd for their fully live performances in which they took traditional jazz instruments and shred them to fuck with their sheer energy and raw funk; an energy they retain to this day, with the added benefit of experience and their unwavering commitment to evolve their sound all the while ignoring the siren calls of the commercial mainstream.

Make sure you catch this essential band playing Live at The Garage on December 1st.

Listen to Rich Thair’s 911 Mix to get you in the mood:

Two classics - on VHS - from one of cinema's most unflinching auteurs

A Harmony Korine Double Bill: Trash Humpers and Gummo

Special Double VHS Screening

Trash Humpers

A return to indie filmmaking after Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers concerns a gang of masked nocturnal wanderers who behave in unexpected ways, do unexpected things, and are generally like no other characters ever seen on screen. Reminiscent of David Lynch’s Inland Empire, filmed on video and cut on two VCRs, it is a tribute to the golden age of VHS made in opposition to what Korine has described as the “obsession nowadays with technology and the fact that everything looks so clear” with Trash Humpers celebrating the “strange beauty in the analogue” to create a film that can make you look away as much as make you laugh. Literally the filthiest film alive (sorry, Pink Flamingos).

“Deliberate and provocative… counter-cinema at its best… to remind us of the power of film.”
- Little White Lies

“One of the most fully-formed (and undeniably affecting) art movies of recent years.”
- Ultra Culture

“The home movie from hell”
- The Guardian

“A corrective to Hollywood”
- The Observer

“Has no small share of perverse beauty, particularly for those who miss thea charming imperfections of videocassettes in this squeaky-clean digital era” – Variety

Gummo
Korine’s first outing as director after writing Larry Clark’s Kids, Gummo presents a series of vignettes based around a small town hit by a tornado, two paint-sniffing adolescent boys, two teenage girls exploring sexuality and beauty with Korine’s ensemble of outcasts trying to find ways to pass the time in unusual and often extreme ways. Inspiring comparisons with Werner Herzog and Lars Von Trier, Gummo made Korine one of the most exciting and divisive figures in American cinema.

“Extraordinary… and disturbing. The most exciting debut by a director of his generation” – Dazed and Confused

“One of the most truthful pieces of filmmaking in a long time”
- Johnny Depp

“It knocked me off my chair”
- Werner Herzog -

“Breathtakingly original”

- Time Out

“Genius” -
Gus Van Sant

Andrew Dosunmu's tale of a Senegalese émigré trying to make it in NY

Hats off to Michael A. Gonzales from Blackadelic Pop for tipping me off to RESTLESS CITY, a new film by Naija man Andrew Dosunmu showing earlier this week at the London Film Festival.

For any readers of the Fader, the name Dosunmu should ring a bell. He shot those saturated Fader covers featuring the likes of the OutKast, BLK JKS and Mavado, as well as taking the pictures for The Beautiful Game, a sleek and seductive book about football in Africa released around the time of the 2006 World Cup.

When news that Dosunmu had made a film about a Senegalese émigré living in New York, I knew I had to see it. Dosunmu has previously made one film, Hot Irons, about hair styling in the inner city, but Restless City is his debut feature and a brave outing at that.

It’s the story of Djibril (Gabriel), a recent transplant working on the streets of Harlem selling pirate CDs but with street dreams of being an emcee. But if you’re thinking this sounds like another rags-to-riches saga, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

In fact, the first thing to say about Restless City is that even if there is a narrative, in the hands of Dosunmu this film is more like a collection of meticulously composed images – there’s Djibril in leather trench coat, red moped and matching headphone cans, riding along Central Park; there are frenetic pairs of feet kicking a football over the rooftops of the city; a hairdresser reflected in the mirror of an African beauty salon; an underground dungeon of a recording studio – full of deep colours, as well as the judicious use of light, reflections and lens flare.

The story of Restless City, as Dosunmu emphasised before the screening of his film, is about the experiences of immigrants who live abroad not because they’ve been forced to, but from personal choice. It’s a story that’s been treated in films like Dirty Pretty Things and David Cronenburg’s Eastern Promises, but if those films were high on drama, full of mutilated bodies and thick accents, Restless City is more subtle and, for that, more truthful.

The film isn’t perfect, and it’s difficult to know whether this has more to do with the budget or the slightly unusual approach of a director more familiar with the medium of photography.

But in cities like New York and London, where there are 8 million stories, we need films like Restless City that capture not just Downtown Manhattan or fey Williamsburg but the parts of the city where, for a second, you could think you’re in Port au Prince or Mumbai or Dakar.

Can’t wait for this, happening on Friday. Launched by the people behind The Very Best, Super Mom has risen from the ashes of the Secousse club and features a new generation of Afro-diasporic music, from the rootical to the bass-driven.

The first night saw Mumford and Sons do a DJ set, the queen of South African pop – Thandiswa Mwazwai do her first ever DJ set, African Boy, Killa Kela & Macc Mello do live P.A’s and The Very Best’s first DJ set in London for more than a year. The night went too well to stop there so they decided to run the ‘Super Mom’ night monthly during the summer, finishing with an Ibiza style end of season Halloween party on the 21st of October.

This time around, the bill includes MNEK (signed to EMI) as well as good friend of SHOOK, Xuman from visionary African hip-hop crew Pee Froiss. The Very Best is fresh back from Malawi and the final recordings of the new The Very Best album and will celebrate with a special DJ set.
With the likes of Pariah, D/R/U/G/S & Sex Worker, they nailed it again

The fourth annual new music and arts festival curated by London label No Pain In Pop and promoters Lanzarote, held for the first time in East London but remaining the definitive event for establishing acts that are on the cusp of breaking into wider popularity. The 2 day festival opens on Friday 21st October, with Pariah headlining the bill alongside Manchester’s D/R/U/G/S, Miracle and Halls.

Pariah is a rising Croydon wonderkid and a high water mark of the relentlessly “post-dubstep” world. The 22 year old producer, who’s real name is Arthur Cayze, originally from Scotland, has always been hugely passionate about music, and at the beginning of 2009 he made his first steps into production and DJing. 2010 saw the release of his debut 10″ single “Detroit Falls/Orpheus” on the newly revitalized label, R&S, to which he is signed. That was followed up a few months later with a 6 track EP entitled “Safehouses”. As of February 2011, Arthur has a number of releases planned for the year, including a collaborative EP with a fellow producer.

Joining Pariah on Friday…

D/R/U/G/S – Euphoricly inclined Manchester producer whose oustanding rave-lite tunes can’t decide whether they like the ghost of house or Factory more.

Miracle – Hazy, veering pyschadelia from the Kevin Shields, ‘White Light/White Heat’ and Andrew Weatherall canon.

Patten (No Pain In Pop) – Bleeding edge mecha-house and hallucinatory raw funk Zomby and Actress style, responsible for “one of the year’s most exciting debuts” (FACT).

Halls – Downbeaten James Blakeian histronics hung over a Burial 2-step soundscape from a new South London producer more than likely to get the night bus home.

No Pain In Pop DJs – A London record label and festival founders who focus on tireless leftfield music which retains a melodic and modern aesthetic.

Off Modern DJs – Creative collective based in South London already established as an influential platform for grass roots artists and musicians.

Tickets for Friday are available for £7, as a single day ticket on See Tickets. Limited combined Friday and Saturday Tickets can be bought online here

Saturday sees a UK exclusive show from Nite Jewel, alongside Sex Worker, Echo Lake and much more. You may know Sex Worker from track such as this one…

The Chimurenga Chronic

Chimurenga’s new publishing project is a once-off, one-day-only edition of a fictional pan African newspaper. The Chimurenga Chronic is backdated to the week of May 18-24 2008, the period marked by the outbreak of so-called xenophobic violence in South Africa.

A low-tech time-travel machine, The Chimurenga Chronic seeks to provide an alternative to mainstream representations of history, on the one hand filling the gap in the historical coverage of this event, whilst at the same time reopening it.

The Newspaper

The 128-page multi-section broadsheet features news, analysis and long-form journalism by award-winning writers and journalists. Its content rages from in-depth investigations into xenophobia, border politics, the business of migration and ethnic economics, to innovative coverage of sports, arts, mental health, media, technology and more.

The stand-alone 40 page Chronic Life Magazine features photography, essays, guides, games, columns and more, and the Chronic Book Review Magazine is a self-contained 96 page magazine packed with interviews, analysis and over 30 pages of book reviews, as well as new fiction and poetry.

The Chronic also comes packaged with a free audio CD supplement in the form of a “mixtape,” titled Dipalo and composed, arranged and performed by Neo Muyanga.

A Pan African Collaboration

In an effort to challenge the newspaper’s history as a tool of nationalism, The Chimurenga Chronic is a pan African production, created in cooperation with independent publishers Kwani? in Kenya and Nigeria’s Cassava Republic Press. It brings together journalists and editors, writers, theorists, photographers, illustrators and artists from around Africa and the world to create a platform for debate, dialogue and exchange.
