Has there ever been a more remarkable book store owner?

While watching Spike Jonze’s excellent short film, Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side), I was pleased to see the stop-motion animation set in the remarkable Parisian bookshop, Shakespeare and Company.

Buoyed by the charming love story, it prompted me to rewatch a documentary about Shakespeare and Company from a few years ago, Portrait of of a Bookstore as an Old Man. The old man in the title is the store’s founder, George Whitman, an extraordinary gentleman who sadly died in December, falling short of his century by just two years.

There’s plenty of quality obits about George Whitman, see for yourself. I found Jeanette Winterson’s the most poetic.

“He made his own world, and that is the best that anyone can do.”

Bonne nuit George.

The Garden of Croatian rave delights reviewed.

Building on the success of its debut last year, when Carl Craig and Theo Parrish headlined, Stop Making Sense Festival’s second Croatian outing proved to be another rip-roaring success.

A tagline of “3 DAYS & NIGHTS OF MUSICAL ANARCHY BY THE SEA” didn’t sound entirely my cup of tea, however, the chance to lounge in 30⁰ sunshine, then dance under clear skies to some of my favourite DJs, did appeal. Decisions made, flights were booked and we arrived on the Wednesday, two days prior to when the full festivities kicked off.

Before long we’d settled in Petrčane, a small village on Croatia’s north Dalmatian coast, and got to know the area. Along a short strip of pebbled coast line is a pine-covered peninsula, where woods meet the Adriatic sea and The Garden can be found, a purpose-built rave grotto that hosts five different festivals over the summer (including Suncébeat). With Petrčane housing less than 600 permanent residents, the population soars during the summer, as up to 2000 people attend each of the festivals, filling apartments or campsites.

Stop Making Sense (SMS) is loosely divided into four different parts. Three of these are in The Garden; at either the Beach Bar, a wooden dancefloor on the edge of the Adriatic, or within Club Barbarella, a venue divided into an outdoor area that serves as the Main Stage, and an indoor club that kept going until after sunrise. In addition to these spots, boat parties departed twice daily on Friday, Saturday, Sunday (plus a bonus excursion on Thursday and Monday).

Friday provided the first wow moments of SMS 2011 as Floating Points and Tropics delivered superb sunset sets. After dark, Martyn kept the quality coming from Deviation’s Main Stage. Mixing old and new tracks he sent the dancefloor into a frenzy; had there been a roof he’d have blown it off. From classic Trax to his own productions to Cameo it was arguably the set of the weekend.

Austrian live trio, Elektro Guzzi, received much praise for their performance as part of Sub Club’s curating of the Main Stage. Jackmaster was unable to attend but Optimo pleased the enthusiastic crowd.

The boat parties provided popular for those who boarded the Argonaut, although one story did the rounds about an unfortunate individual getting soaked as someone pissed from the top deck to avoid the toilet queue. Reassuringly we avoided such incidents and on Saturday evening, under a setting sun and dazzling full moon, Moxie, Floating Points, Judah and Benji B shared the fun behind the decks as Deviation took to the water. Dancing was all the more amusing by the curved wooden deck and occasional vigorous rocking of the boat. A decade on from her premature death, Aaliyah was an apt final selection.

Sunday daytime saw Warm with Ali Tillett, Rob Summerhayes and Marcus Worgull hosting the 4-hr round trip along the coast to Zadar. Amidst sweat, smiles and an excessive amount of glitter Worgull’s deep house selections kept the crowd moving.

Back on land, Body & SOUL’s trinity: Francois K, Danny Krivit, and Joe Claussell entertained the Main Stage from late afternoon to night before Secret Sundaze brought three long days to a close. James Priestley’s 6am selection of Donald Byrd’s (Fallin’ Like) Dominos was fitting as the amount of people still dancing diminished.

A sceptical pre-festival comment from a friend that the event would be “Shoreditch on sea” (complete with coke-fiends and boozed aggro) was unsubstantiated, with one of the long weekend’s most appealing parts being the cheerful crowd. Even though it seemed many punters had travelled from London, whether due to the sea air or intense sun, the posing and stony faces that often frequent London clubs weren’t there.

Returning to a grey British summer sky made the trip was all the more worthwhile. If you’re having doubts about whether to book next year, shelve them and start saving.

Come one, come all, for Boiler Room’s 5-a-side football. Tournament.

As if hosting and broadcasting, London’s (and the world’s?) top Tuesday night of underground music wasn’t enough. The Boiler Room’s inner circle have decided to put on a 5-a-side football tournament, with teams made up of affliated labels, radio stations and regulars. Last we heard there were a few places still to fill so if you want to play, get blagging!

Garmed out in Umbro shirts, including some dotted with Peter Saville’s multi-coloured crosses, there could be some sore heads and aching limbs following Saturday night’s gigantic Boiler Room meets Rush Hour event at Cable with Virgo Four, Rick Wilhite and BNJMN.

The afternoon-into-evening will also have a BBQ and a soundsystem, plus an after party. With the forecast rain-free it should be a fun Sunday.

For more details and their video trailer (with HudMo soundtrack) visit: boilerroom.tv/fives

Bonus football and music action: Forget Diamond Nights, Fog on the Tyne or even the brilliant World in Motion, football-themed music tracks don’t get much better than one of Clint Mansell’s finest PWEI moments, here’s Pop Will It Itself with Touched by the hand of Cicciolina.

The end will never come

But you can’t decide

Run and Hide

(Jay Electronica)
Sentimental rain drops
The tears fall in increments
Like incremental pain drops
That wash away the stained spots
The Western World is just a hive of Scum and Villainy
That’s why Superheroes wear disguises in trilogies.
When the future is uncertain,
And the wizard is just a man inside the booth behind the curtain
Behaving like a serpent
With a bag full of everything,
Except your home,
Just remember, be yourself,
And accept your own,
Or Run & Hide…

The Swedish 4-piece step further from the stage to the rave.

A stone’s throw below an enormous pink elephant, Little Dragon treated the Boiler Room’s crowd, both inside Corsica Studios and online, to a delightfully intimate show.

Little Dragon have always had a knack for crafting neat ear-pleasing songs. Their new material, from their third LP Ritual Union, takes them a further step from the stage to the rave. With more locked grooves than before, the foursome polyrhythmically provoke dance, best shown through their penultimate live track: Precious.
